How a Gynecologic Oncologist Can Help You
As specialists, we have more experience with gynecologic cancers than generalists have.
All of our doctors who treat gynecologic cancers are gynecologic oncologists. That's a doctor who is board certified first in obstetrics and gynecology, then in gynecologic oncology. There are only about 600 gynecologic oncologists nationwide.
As specialists, gynecologic oncologists have more experience than generalists. Because they perform surgery only in this one area, they know more about how and where cancer hides. And because they're gynecologists, too, they can quickly identify whether your condition requires special attention or may be cancerous.
Our doctors are committed to helping you receive the most progressive treatments available -- without having to leave the area. Because they participate in national clinical trials, our patients have access to new treatments that aren’t available everywhere.
Whenever it’s possible, you’ll have laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery, which has less scarring and gets you home faster. If you hope to have children in the future, we’ll do everything possible to keep that option open for you. If you’re interested in participating in research, we’ll look for opportunities for you. And if there is anything we can do to make your journey through cancer easier, we will make it happen.
"My Mom was diagnosed with gynecologic cancer when I was four years old. I remember the stress and hardship cancer caused my family. I am so grateful to my mother's medical team for saving her life and thankful that she is still doing well. I am determined to do the best I can for other families facing cancer."
- Martin A. Martino, M.D.
"The women and their families I’ve have had the privilege to care for have amazed me with their grace, courage and positive outlook. I gain inspiration from them and that drives me to do all I can in the fight against gynecologic cancers. The other doctors and I actively participate in research to find better ways to treat these cancers and, we hope, one day we will be able to cure cancer."
- Richard M. Boulay, M.D.
"I believe that the best possible care for my patients depends on understanding each and every one of them as an individual – not just their medical condition, but their lives, what’s on their minds, what they’re afraid of. I am humbled and inspired by my patients, and I want to help them in every way I can – not just in the operating room and with chemotherapy, but throughout their fight. That’s why I always ask my patients, my staff and myself, 'Can I do more?'"
